Mr. Somchai said he had met last night with the chairman of Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp. (which hired the Thai workers to construct a subway) who reaffirmed that his firm will pay salaries to its Thai workers on September 5.

Representatives of the Thai labour office will be invited to witness the salary payment to the workers, he said, saying also that the employers agreed to pay back money previously deducted from the workers\' salaries amounting to 1,000 Taiwan dollars each month as guarantee.

He said the employers had also decided to terminate its contract with a Taiwan agent oversee the welfare of Thai workers and that his company would directly care for the workers\' welfare.
