Protection and Promotionof the Rights of Migrant Workers

The well-attended Sub Regional Consultation on the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant workers, co-organized by the Task Force on ASEAN Migrant Workers, NTUC, ILO, ATUC, UNI APRO and Migrant Forum in Asia, brought together a wide array of participants from trade unions, global union federations (including PSI, BWI and UNI APRO), non-governmental organizations, international organizations and other civil society organizations to discuss how to strengthen and promote the protection and the rights of migrant workers.
The objectives of the 2-day program included:
Discussion on the impact of the ASEAN Charter in the region and what can be done in advancing the principles of the ASEAN Declaration on Promotion and Protection of Migrant workers;
To call for the implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (Cebu, Philippines, 13 January 2007), and and to level-off on initiatives in the area of the promotion and protection of all migrant workers
To study the relevant international instruments and mechanisms, particularly the ILO Multilateral Framework, in relation to the initiatives of the Taskforce on ASEAN Migrant Workers to draft a model ASEAN framework instrument on the protection and promotion of the rights of migrants workers
The program included presentations by Sinapan Samydorai from the Taskforce on the ASEAN Migrant Workers; ASEAN Trade Union Council (ATUC); Mohammed Shafie Mammal, UNI Malaysia; William Gois, Regional Coordinator of Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA); Charles Santiago, Director of Monitoring Sustainability of Globalisation (Malaysia); Ellen A. Sana, Executive Director of Center for Migrant Advocacy Philippines; Rex Varona, Executive Director of Asian Migrant Center (Hong Kong); and, Michihiro Ishibashi, Senior Specialist on Workers?Activities (ILO Sub-regional Office for SEA and the Pacific).

Workshop on advancing the Rights of Migrant.workers

Workshop on advancing the Rights of Migrant.Workers begun during the Sub Regional Consultation to produce an input for a proposed action plan on how the various organizations will engage on implementing the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the rights of migrant workers.
The informal consultation process provides the opportunity for networking among the CSO and Trade Unions in a "friendly enviroment" and space for promoting soldiarity activities on the rights of migrant workers in ASEAN.
