ASEAN must recognize domestic work as "work"

7th June 2011, the 100th Session of the International Labour Conference adopted the ILO Convention on Decent Work for Domestic Work. ASEAN Member States must ratify and fully implement the ILO Convention on Decent Work for Domestic Work which is key to the legal recognition of domestic workers and their rights.

TFAMW co-organized a Regional Workshop on the Implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the rights of migrant workers. More then 100 participants from ASEAN Member States actively exchange views on better protecting the rights of migrant workers. The Workshop was part of the series of workshops organized the 7th ACSC/APF before the 18th ASEAN Summit and a civil society report was submit to the ASEAN leaders.

The TFAMW co-organized a Workshop (9-10 April 2011) on the Drafting of the ASEAN Framework Instrument on the protection and promotion of the rights of migrant workers. The Workshop participate by 50 mostly local participants was a parallel event to the ACMW Meeting (11-12 April 2011). The results of the workshop was delivered to both the Indonesian ACMW Rep (Chair) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ASEAN Directorate).

Thailand: Rights Groups call for improved rights for Migrant Workers

TFAMW organized the Thai National Consultation. 15 February 2011 as follow-up activity 14 Thai and Burmese Migrant Workers Groups delivered the open letter to the Thai Ministry of labour calling for better protection of the rights of migrant workers. They also called for the full implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the protection and promotion of the rights of migrant workers.

Protecting the rights of migrant workers and their families: Malaysia’s obligation

7 and 8 December 2009 , the ACMW Drafting Committee meets in Kuala Lumpur hosted by the Ministry of Human Resources. A significant number of migrant workers in the region are temporary workers, domestic workers, informal sector workers and self-employed workers. It is important to ensure that these categories of workers, who are often overlooked, are included in the coverage of a regional Instrument.

ASEAN Framework Instrument for migrant workers must be legally binding

The 2nd ASEAN Forum on Migrant labour refered to the TF-AMW civil society’s proposal on the ASEAN Framework Instrument for the protection and promotion of the rights of migrant workers. The Forum held on 30-31 July 2009 by the Thai Ministry of labour and ASEAN Secretariat recommended the inclusion of all migrant workers and their families in the coverage of the ASEAN Framework Instruments being drafted by the ACMW.
