23 November 2011 Cambodia Workshop Statement

The Cambodia Workshop on the Implementation of the 2007 ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (ADMW) involved over 80 participants and over 50 civil society organisations (CSOs) working with migrant workers (NGOs, trade unions, recruitment agencies and the media).

The 4th ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour provided a platform for information sharing and exchange of views on two enduring challenges identified in the ASEAN Declaration of the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers, i.e. promoting understanding, rights and dignity of migrant workers in the receiving countries, and increasing return and reintegration support, as well as development of sustainable alternatives for migrant workers in the sending countries.

However, in practice, fulfilling this role has become a challenge. The capacity building workshop is organize in Kanthao District, Xayabuly, with active participation of local trade union leaders from 13 districts.

ASEAN must recognize domestic work as "work"

7th June 2011, the 100th Session of the International Labour Conference adopted the ILO Convention on Decent Work for Domestic Work. ASEAN Member States must ratify and fully implement the ILO Convention on Decent Work for Domestic Work which is key to the legal recognition of domestic workers and their rights.

TFAMW co-organized a Regional Workshop on the Implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the rights of migrant workers. More then 100 participants from ASEAN Member States actively exchange views on better protecting the rights of migrant workers. The Workshop was part of the series of workshops organized the 7th ACSC/APF before the 18th ASEAN Summit and a civil society report was submit to the ASEAN leaders.

Jakarta: ASEAN urged to speed up talks on migrant worker protection

The TFAMW co-organized a Workshop (9-10 April 2011) on the Drafting of the ASEAN Framework Instrument on the protection and promotion of the rights of migrant workers. The Workshop participate by 50 mostly local participants was a parallel event to the ACMW Meeting (11-12 April 2011). The results of the workshop was delivered to both the Indonesian ACMW Rep (Chair) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ASEAN Directorate).

Civil Society Reps meet Chair of ASEAN Committee of Permanent Representatives

The 10 CSO representatives including the the TFAMW Convenor meet and submit the recommendations to the CPR chair. The TFAMW deliver its recommendation on the implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the protection and promotion of the rights of the migrant workers. TFAMW also request the CPR to support the participation of CSO groups in the ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour.

Thailand: Rights Groups call for improved rights for Migrant Workers

25-26 January 2011. TFAMW organized the Thai National Consultation. 15 February 2011 as follow-up activity 14 Thai and Burmese Migrant Workers Groups delivered the open letter to the Thai Ministry of labour calling for better protection of the rights of migrant workers. They also called for the full implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the protection and promotion of the rights of migrant workers.
